Qik Releases Online Video Streaming Via BlackBerry Phones
By: Senior staff writer – Easton Ellsworth
Want to publish live streaming video to the Web on your CrackBerry, er, BlackBerry?
Qik, a tech startup specializing in live video via cell phone, now allows you to do just that.
(See the company blog, online newsroom and FAQ information for Qik.)
While the new software is still in alpha mode, there is support for the highly popular BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl phones (but not yet for the Curve or Flip, which are newer BlackBerry cellphones).
I like Qik. It’s got a great little URL (although I’m still trying to figure out if it’s pronounced “kick” or “quick”), a simple interface and always something interesting to watch.
I do worry for Qik that an online video behemoth like YouTube will trump it soon by launching a live streaming service of its own.
But if Qik can continue to roll out upgrades like this that enable it to partner closely with equipment makers (in this instance, cell phone manufacturers), it stands a chance.
Curve, will be available in a later release that the company expects soon).
Coming soon, we hope: Apple iPhone Qik support. (Imagine showing everyone your Google Earth vids on your iPhone with Qik – sweet.)
