BackType is being backed bigtime – thus saith TechCrunch.

That’s right – the conversation tracking service has just closed a $300,000 financing round via True Ventures.

I used to be a coComment power user – one of the most active of all – and I’ve found BackType to be an effective replacement. I still like coComment, but I’ve found BackType to be quicker and more reliable for my needs.

BackType is building the comment search engine that coComment seems naver to have gotten around to building. It lets you track people (like moi), topics or even individual articles. And of course here are plenty of widgets to go around.

And the news from BackType now is that they’ve implemented BackType Connect, which lets you track conversations online that happen around a given article.

There’s a certain parallel between BackType and Twitter, the microblogging service that’s practically the talk of every town these days. The former allows you to discover what people are saying at articles, while the latter lets you see what they are saying on their own streams – which often reference other streams or articles.

I think BackType is to be applauded. They have made a platform that’s very simple (a huge factor in getting early adopters to spread the word), clean and robust. I hope they roll out the full search capabilities as soon as possible.
