Google Updating Real Estate Search
by Senior Staff Writer – Tyler Knott Gregson
This one could be, and we’re stressing could be here, a very big “uh oh” for the rest of the real estate world. As you already know, Google is without a shadow of a doubt, the most dominant and powerful internet company. While it’s clear they have some competition rising up the ranks (see also Facebook), so far, Google is the powerhouse and the bigboy on the block.
So when that powerhouse decides to stick its finger into an industry like real estate, I’m fairly sure that even if it’s not completely set up and polished yet, we could probably hear the collective *gasp* of other real estate companies and sites around the world. Yes, Google is expanding its real estate listings on their Google Maps, and yes, this could be a pretty big blow to the traffic that current industry leaders like Realtor.com, Zillow and Yahoo Real Estate are receiving.
If time is any indicator, however, they don’t have to be too scared. Google Map/Real Estate has been around for awhile, and so far they haven’t even made a dent in the traffic any of them are receivin. Will this new update cause it? Possibly, but the simple fact of the matter is, it doesn’t work as good as any of the competition, and until it does, I don’t see the traffic flow being redirected.
The bottom line is, when Google decides to do something, it’s worth paying attention to. They might not always succeed at first, but when you have the power and resources that they do, anything is possible. So, for all you other real estate sites: Don’t gasp yet, but you might want to start holding your breath a little.
