Reel Director Demo ScreenshotWow – you guys are fast with the questions.

While posting my OWLE Bubo unboxing photos I briefly mentioned Reel Director for iPhone and received two tweets and two email messages asking more about it.

In short, Reel Director is what Apple should have released with the iPhone 3GS.

When the iPhone 3GS was first released Apple included minimal video clip trimming – you could trim the beginning and end of the video and that was about all you could do. Oh – and to make matters worse, it was destructive, meaning that your edits were made to the original video, not a copy. Once you trimmed that video of your kid’s birthday party, those moments were gone forever. (To their credit, they made editing non-destructive in a software update.)

What couldn’t you do with iPhone 3GS editing? All the other functions you expect from a basic video editor: join clips together, add titles, add transitions and music to your video before you upload it.

Reel Director does all of these things except for the music, which they plan to include in a future release.

In my tests, Reel Director is a solid application with a relatively intuitive interface and some very sophisticated options.

Titling & Credits

Titling can be placed nearly anywhere on the screen and can fade in and out of your video. This is great, but I would prefer some more font options.

Transitions

There are actually more transitions than the average person would even use but my favorites are there (fade to white, dissolve, fade to black).

Editing

Editing is as simple as dragging a finger across the timeline. You can cut, copy and paste using the standard iPhone gestures and clipboard.

I could do my own screenshots and walk you through the feature set but the folks at Nexvio have already produced a video demo that is better than anything I could do!

They’re a startup with two iPhone apps and according to their site, more on the way.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.
