I feel, peaceful. Focused. And a little strange writing this.

I’m drafting this post in a new text editor called OmmWriter.

Similar to WriteRoom, the bare bones, distraction-free editor, Ommwriter is a full screen experience, blocking out all other windows and my Mac desktop. I couldn’t understand why, when I launched the application, the splash screen said “Better with Headphones.”

That’s because it comes with a soundtrack.

As the name of the software might imply, the developer has attempted to create a very peaceful, Zen-like experience during the writing process. And as I write this, I’m starting to believe.

Now, on to the practical stuff.

If you mouseover anywhere outside the writing area you’ll discover that you have a certain level of control over the writing experience.

You can control the size of the typing area within the screen which could be helpful depending on what you’re writing. I personally like the default size and placement.
OmmWriter Mouseover Controls
In the upper right, above the text entry area there are a series of controls in a vertical layout. In order of appearance:

OmmWriter Controls

  • Font Style: Sans Serif, Serif, Cursive
  • Font Size
  • Background image or color (I’m partial to the default snow covered field and bare trees)
  • Music: You can select up to seven soundtracks including running water, forest sounds, music, etc.
  • Keyboard Sounds: You can change the audible feedback of your keystrokes. The default sounds like the tittering of small birds, but they all have an organic feel to them.
  • Save Options: These are simply Save, Save As or Open. The file format is plain text.

I could get used to this.

Ommwriter is in Beta, so I immediately assumed that it would move to a stable product then released as commercial software for the Mac – but I was mistaken. The software has a freeware license and the company that created it, Herraiz Soto & Co, asks only that you share it with the writers in your life. I guess this post is my contribution toward their wishes.

You can download it from here.
