I’m on a Phone Music Video Winner Hits On Bigger Trend of 2009: The Popularity of Music Apps
By Staff Writer – Boonsri Dickinson (@boonspoon)
The “I’m on a Phone” video won the Grand Prize in the I Am T-Pain “I’m on a Boat” contest. The Misunderstoods took home $5,000. They also get “one big ass chain” and “2009 Smulean Bragging Rights.”
The success of T-Pain’s I am T-Pain iPhone app, measured in its 700,000 downloads, hints at a future when all singers have their own apps. After all, 2009 was the year of artist centered iPhone apps. Not only can you rap to T-Pain, you can remix David Bowie and sing to Lady Gaga. 50 made an app so women see how much they’d earn if they had a baby with him — to hit on the theme of his song, ‘Baby By Me.’
Smule, the company that created T-Pain’s app just scored $8 million in funding, upping the total to $13.7 million. Another popular app, Ocarina, turns your phone into an instrument. This has been downloaded 1.65 million times. The apps aren’t free — they’ve made $3 million this year.
