Manage Your Social Media Through Postling

I never really ask people how they manage their social media accounts, but I should.

This past month, I went from just having Facebook and Twitter to having a Tumblr blog, a Squarespace blog, and this blog. OMG, I need social media management right now! Luckily, I discovered Postling, a new start-up company that would give me a way to manage my social networks, all from one place.

In August, David Lifson launched Postling with the co-founders of Etsy, Chris Maguire and Haim Schoppik. The business relationship began several years ago when Maguire and Schoppik hired Lifson to run the product team at Etsy. Soon after, the three of them began their own project and tried to improve the community of Bed and Breakfast Inns.

“We built a site, but realized the business model wasn’t going to work. We remembered what we did learn,” says Lifson. The B&B owners were overwhelmed by social media. “They said that social media took up too much of their time. They told us they’d pay to have it in one place,” he says.

The eureka moment came to the trio on June 15th, 2009. They got to work quickly, by setting up shop at the start-up incubator, DreamIt Ventures in Philadelphia.  They launched Postling within two months.

“You can publish to all your accounts without having to log into them,” says Lifson. You can track anyone who writes to you on Twitter and anyone who leaves a message on your Facebook wall. From Postling, restaurant owners can know if someone has written a good or bad review by tracking comments left on sites like Yelp and Citysearch.

Initially, the product was aimed at small businesses for a small fee. But four months in, they’ve changed their pricing to cater to two types of clients. One account is made for people like me and small business owners, who seem to sign up for every type of social media out there. This free account lets you post to social networks like Facebook or Tumblr. You can also reply to tweets and Facebook messages from Postling as well.

The paid accounts are for businesses like PR firms and corporations who need to manage the social media presence for multiple clients and multiple brands. A client launched a  social media strategy for a video game by bringing together the client, PR, and digital agency on Postling, says Lifson.

Paid or unpaid, both accounts come with social media software, so you can keep tabs on your social reach.

“By tomorrow, we should have 1,000 users,” he says. The growth of Postling is impressive, but how exactly has it changed Lifson’s social media habits? “It’s been great for our organization. We have a social media account for our company. Not only can I manage my personal and professional life in one place, but I can publish for the company without having to share passwords,” he says.

Within the next month, Lifson plans on setting up real-time search by integrating Collecta’s search engine into Postling’s service. “You can search in real time and reblog using Postling. Nobody has done that,” he says.

And just in case you’re wondering, there’s NOT an app for it yet. “But the app is high up on our list of priorities,” says Lifson.
