Skype for iPhone Update Includes Landscape Mode, Still Lacks 3G Support

Skype has been making some big moves after it’s exit from eBay. During CES, the company announced HD videoconferencing with Skype partners announcing hardware to support it.

This week Skype released the latest version of their iPhone app. The update includes landscape mode for the instant messaging feature, but it’s lacking two of the biggest features that the iPhone-using Skype community has been waiting for: Bluetooth headset support and (drum roll please…) VOIP over AT&T’s 3G network.

Even though AT&T changed their policy to allow VOIP over their wireless data network in mid-2009, Skype still hasn’t supported it even though competitors (albeit distant competitors) have taken advantage of AT&T’s loosened guidelines.

I’ve been pretty happy with Skype for the iPhone. It’s saved me a few times when I was in an area without any AT&T coverage. I use my SkypeIn number as my office number so I’ve been really happy with the ability to retrieve my voicemail over the 3G network. Coupled with my new Klipsch S4i headphones with built in microphone, it works great. (Though it would be great if the controls worked for Skype, too.)

Skype for iPhone is free and is available now in the iTunes App Store [iTunes Link].

You might want to get your facts straight-the problems rests with Apple and the Apple store. Skype has had a 3G version ready but has not been given the approval by Apple mafia to submit it. I’m sure Apple is probably developing its own VOIP capability (4.0?) and maybe shaft its competition. I bet ATT is also behind this shady practice even if they came out and supported VOIP over it’s flimsy network. Too bad the BBB won’t investigate Apple’s business practices.

    Thanks for the comment, Glenn.

I haven’t heard about the slow approval process on Apple’s side. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a version of iChat for the iPhone that supports VOIP and possibly even video conferencing.

As for the BBB, well, it’s Apple’s device, Apple’s store and AT&T’s network. They can do what they like, at least until the FCC and possibly FTC say otherwise.
