UStream Launches Desktop Studio Software For Video Live Streaming

UStream has launched UStream Producer, a free desktop application that allows any live video producer the ability to manage video and audio sources, include pre-recorded video, photos screen captures in a live stream, picture-in-picture and co-hosting with other UStream users.

The software is quick to load on my MacBook and setup was completed in a couple of clicks. The software supports only SD bitrates, once camera and three transitions. If you want additional features like multiple camera support, HD bitrates, HD camera support, customizable picture-in-picture and the ability to capture your bitstream locally you’ll need UStream Producer Pro.

This is a direct competitive move against Livestream’s Procaster software and streaming service but with a slightly different model. Livestream’s Procaster is free but your capabilities are limited by the status of your account. Pro features such as custom branding, ad removal and HD content start at $350/month.

UStream takes a slightly difference approach. UStream Producer Pro and its included features will cost you a one-time fee of $199 for the software but your content is still distributed in a UStream-branded player and advertising will be inserted. If you want a private-label video solution from UStream you’ll need to use their Watershed service. Committed monthly plans start at $49 with termination or account switching fee of $199.
