3 Ways Facebook Can Rule the Entire World
By Senior Editor – Kris Smith (@croncast)
Room for new ads. Check
Prepping the masses for more. Check.
Facebook is setting itself up with this redesign to launch a bevy of new features and partnerships with developers to create the largest internet portal ever seen.
Sure, Facebook is a social network but it is about to become the Costco of the internet. They will have nearly everything that you need, in bulk, and they might even serve you pizza before you log off.
There are 3 amazing ways that Facebook can rule the world based on this Costco model.
1. Facebook Business
Forget fan pages and groups. All Facebook needs to do is evolve these pages into full sites with a CMS included so that business owners can manage them. Allowing businesses to have storefronts inside Facebook where they can sell real goods from would have them flocking in droves.
Businesses that can have better control over marketing and manage all of it within Facebook and not have to work through a digital agency will be happier with Facebook and the spoils. By removing the middleman Facebook could take in gobs of money and create more direct relationships with businesses.
2. Facebook Wave
With an addition of structured real-time communication beyond chat Facebook could dominate groupware tools, project management and other office applications. In a heartbeat third party developers would be porting their productivity web apps over and creating new ones. This is just what the cloud is for.
Google is too nerdy, still in 2010 for most internet user to feel comfortable with Docs, Reader or Wave.
If Facebook could harness all of what is good about Docs, Reader and Wave and combine it with a Facebook Business and users friend networks they would be unstoppable in an entirely new vertical.
3. Facebook Search
Everyone is talking about this one but it is true. With the amount of data that Facebook has about users that can be applied to search results for people, places and things they would be able to serve better results than any search engine. By better I mean more relevant and possibly even predict what you will want to search for next or even suggest it to you.
A Facebook, web results search engine embedded and accessible on every Facebook page could not only be the best search ever but double as the best recommendation engine ever. Put some semantic web sauce on it and linked data never tasted so good to the masses that don’t care about semantic, linked or sentiment ranked links.
They just want the good stuff. Facebook could provide it and much more.
