People want fulfilling work and to feel a sense of purpose. Perhaps that’s where the bonus banking scheme mucks up. Finding fulfilling work is the key to motivate people to perform better, Daniel Pink points out in his new book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.

Author Laura Vanderkam reviews Pink’s book:

The carrot-and-stick approach was created for an economy of assembly lines and mindless number-crunching. But these days, “for growing numbers of people, work is often creative, interesting, and self-directed rather than unrelentingly routine, boring, and other-directed,” says Pink.

The corporate world is no longer filled with mind-numbing work to finish assembly lines. But it thrives when people are creative and are free to come up with new ideas. Of course, the best way to tap into your creative strength is to be a freelancer. That way you decide what you want to do all the time.

Watch the video for a glimpse at what drives you. In the video, it shows influential men and describes how their impact can be summed up into on sentence. So think about your sentence. And every night, ask yourself if you are improving?
