“The Frathouse for Geeks” looks like it has quite a hangover today. The promises made to small business owners during President Barack Obama’s first State of the Union Address last night probably kept them up late.

The frat house is normally full of start-up business owners, but today, entrepreneur bodies seem to be MIA from Dogpatch headquarters. One of the frat techies who did show up, Mike Green of real-time search company, Collecta, has been talking about the speech since he walked in the door this morning.

“The reaction at Dogpatch today was mostly positive. People asked about the tax implications for our investors and about the credit for hiring new workers,” says Green. His fellow entrepreneurs also talked about health care because start-ups currently have “crappy” health care.

Last night during the address, Green opened a stream on Collecta for the terms “SOTU” and “State of the Union.” To compare, he opened Collecta’s real-time MySpace search product. And Green joined a chat room on an event discussion platform called Hot Potato to talk to members of the tech community.

“Out of the 3 streams, the open web stream on Collecta was most interesting. It was the true bipartisan look into peoples’ reactions and thoughts as they were watching the event, not later when they have had time to filter their responses,” he says.

Businesses create jobs, so it’s not surprising that Obama said “small businesses” 13 times in his address. Read the full speech here. Obama proposed that Congress take $30 billion of the Wall Street bailout money and give it to banks, so they can give small business owners loans. (Small business owners have expressed their need for loans to me before). And 1 million small businesses who hire new workers or give raises will get a tax credit.

If jobs are the number one focus this year, hopefully the unemployment numbers will start to dwindle. Skip to around 15 minutes to hear Obama talk about his plan to help small businesses.

By Staff Writer – Boonsri Dickinson (@boonspoon)

Last month, Bing and Google made a deal with Twitter, so they could crawl tweets in real-time. Start-ups such as OneRiot, Scoopler, CrowdEye, and Collecta are in the race too.

During a cocktail hour last Wednesday, I met Mike Green, the VP of Content and Syndication at Collecta, a company that searches blogs, Twitter, and Flickr in real-time. “We’re the only ones looking across the whole web, streaming new relevant stories and links as that info is hitting the web,” says Green.

When Green was in Los Angeles, he spotted Dave Navarro. He tweeted: “Working at cafe outside on Sunset w/ Collecta team. Just saw Dave Navarro walking into Equinox to work out. Real-time celeb trackin’.” Then he checked Collecta. “We watched the paparazzi swarm him. He pulled out a camera and videotaped himself pushing past them and into the gym. He posted the video right then and the video appeared in my stream on Collecta within two minutes,” says Green.

Even if you’re not a celebrity stalker, you might find real-time search useful. For example, a Google search of Tiger Woods will lead you to his homepage, Wikipedia page, the PGA TOUR website. A Collecta search will give you comments, tweets, stories, photos about him as that new content is being published.

By searching in real-time with its open messaging standard XMPP technology, Collecta can update information instantaneously. Publishers of news, entertainment, and sports are sweet spots, says Green.

If you can’t decide which search engine you really prefer using to find that nugget of information, you may need something other than a search engine. What you could be looking for is a metasearch tool like InfoSpace.

InfoSpace combines the results from Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask, and now even twitter updates are displayed right alongside your organic search results.

If you perform a search and don’t like the results you are getting from one of the larger search engines that’s pulling in results, you can selectively choose to filter out any search provider’s search hits.

The great, new feature of this improved release of InfoSpace is the integration of real-time twitter results into the search. One of my top three benefits of twitter is the way I see it being used as a human power, filtered and trusted search tool. Even if you’re not searching for something specifically on the micro-blogging tool, with some many users you can almost guarantee that someone is talking about what you’re searching for at any given time. Once you find that person, you can either see what they’re talking about, or with the followers/followees you can see who they’re sharing that information.

I’ve highlighted in yellow how the twitter results appear above. It just fits and makes sense to me. Seeing that type of real-time conversation results now seems glaringly missing from your normal search engines.

InfoSpace, when it comes to search, is visibly bringing it all together.

by Senior Staff Writer – Tyler Knott Gregson

We’ve said it once, we’ll say it again…when it comes to staying current with the trends of this crazy thing we call the Internet, it looks like the only way to do so is to jump on the ‘real-time’ bandwagon. One of the leaders in that, up to this point, has actually been FriendFeed, the one stop shop for all your social networking activity, and it looks like they’re going a step further and even making their search results real-time.

That’s right, they’ve done it again and updated their platform to include real-time search results to go along with everything else that is actually real-time on their site. While other sites CLAIM to be real-time, a lot of them are actually lacking the continuous data stream that actually makes something real time or not. That said, starting today when you search for something on FriendFeed, the results that come in will be constantly updated based on the data in your network, and the things you choose to follow. Cool.

According to reports:

“Enter any query into FriendFeed’s search box and you’ll see a constantly updating stream of items related to it. It works for advanced searches too. Best of all, it also searches through comments left below items. And these results can even be embedded in other blogs, as you can see right now on the FriendFeed blog.”

It will be interesting to see where they take things next, and who else will follow suit. Real-time is really popular, and we’re beginning to wonder just how high the bar is going to be set for even more applications of real-time technology.

Twitter started it, Friend Feed adopted it, Facebook’s doing it, and now, it looks like Digg is dropping little hints that it too will be doing it. IT, in this case, is the extremely popular and borderline over-used term of “real-time.” That’s right, word on the block is that sometime in the next few months, Digg will be jumping on board the “real-time” bandwagon and adding it to a complete overhaul of their existing site.

When it will happen remains to be seen, but according to TechCrunch it will be sometime in the next 6 months. We already know they revamped their search, and now it’s looking like the entire site will be changing. Michael Arrington sat down with Kevin Rose and tried to uncover some answers.

by Senior Staff Writer Tyler Knott Gregson

Just in case you thought things on Facebook weren’t advancing at a fast enough rate, they just shook things up once again and added more features that once again put the neverending stream of user information at the forefront of their platform, now you just don’t have to wait.

That’s right, real-time, live streaming has come to Facebook. While not every account is currently equipped with it, worry not, if you’re not already, you will be soon. Before you know it you will be seeing a neverending stream of data all about the people you call Facebook Friends. That’s the “good” news. The “bad” news is that not everyone is welcome to tinker with their “open-stream api” and some developers are even seeing their older applications, particularly ones that dealt with RSS feeds of the stream, being shut down and turned off completely. Could this be an “oops” on Facebook’s part, as those developers might find a friendlier home on other social networking sites that do let them tinker? I guess we’ll see.

Facebook released some information on their blog about this, and here’s what they had to say:

“We’ve always focused the stream on real-time updates, but before today you needed to refresh your browser to see the most recent posts since logging in…The stream now updates automatically and gives you the option to view new posts with a prompt at the top of the page immediately below the Publisher.”

Looks like this time they played it right and relied a lot on User feedback before rolling out this new feature. Maybe this time around, we won’t be seeing Facebook Groups formed with millions of users against the change. Maybe.

By: Senior staff writer – Easton Ellsworth

Here’s one for ya. It’s an imaginary murder mystery.

Who killed Twitter in 2010?

The answer, if this harrowing story becomes real, could well be Facebook.

Why Facebook? Well, the social networking behemoth is now implementing real-time updates in a much bigger way than before.

For example, see Silicon Valley Insider’s sneak peek at the new version’s screenshots.

Then there’s the official Facebook blog with a post by CEO Mark Zuckerberg explaining the changes and putting them in the context of the company’s explosive growth and need to respond to emerging trends on the social Web.

The stream is the new timeline.

Even the Facebook homepage – what you see when you first log in – is full of activity now in a way that it wasn’t before.

If you can’t join ‘em – er, acquire ‘em – beat ‘em. That’s what Facebook appears to be attempting here in relation to Twitter.

Here’s why I think Twitter stands more than a fighting chance of staving off starvation in the face of Facebook’s, um, facelift.

The community decides where to live. Peer pressure keeps systems intact even when jumping ship seems logical.

But I don’t think it ever become logical, at least with things as they are now, for Twitter users to quit updating their Twitter accounts and instead just update their Facebook pages. There’s a sifting that has to happen, and perhaps one of the to services will swallow the updating abilities of the other.

In Twitter vs. Facebook, who are you rooting for? Who do you think will win the real-time social networking wars?
