A couple of weeks ago I wrote about WebMii, a service that ranks your web presence based on what it finds about you using Google, Yahoo, Bing and a variety of social media platforms.

What WebMii is for individuals, WooRank is for web sites.

WooRank attempts to analyze your site and its level of influence based on a variety of inputs including search results, in-site SEO analysis, off-site SEO analysis, response time and other factors. Here’s what the profile for TechStartups.com looks like:

Our “WooRank” is 60.3. The average is 50.9! We’re huge!

I have no idea how this is calculated, so it’s all just random number generation as far as I’m concerned.

Next, here is our estimated traffic. Quite a wide swing in terms of an estimate but we’re closer to the upper end than the lower. The Alexa and Compete rankings are nice to see side-by-side.

Content appears to be analyzed using Google, thought it doesn’t say which search engine they’re checking for indexed pages. It also tells us the most popular pages.

In-site SEO is interesting. It provides a simple report covering basic factors that affect your ranking.

Website Compliance refers to W3C compliance and not any other such as supporting ADA (American with Disabilities Act) compliance.

Off-Site SEO is not all that helpful. Google crawls the site all the time, but WooRank can’t determine when the last crawl date was. It also uses Delicious, Digg and Twitter as a means of measuring one-way links back to the site. Beyond that, it’s missing quite a bit in terms of analysis.

Usability is just an odd ranking. How can it tell me how usable the site may be? It’s a bot!

Finally, there’s information about the site itself: the US State in which it’s hosted, the IP and some other random facts.

Like WebMii, it’s fun to play with but I wouldn’t use it as a serious business tool.

<a href="http://www.techstartups.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/twittergooglemicrosoft.gif""><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="twitter-google-microsoft" border="0" alt="twitter-google-microsoft" src="http://www.techstartups.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/twittergooglemicrosoft.gif"" width="350" height="95" />

The folks at twitter may have found a way to start generating some serious revenue from all those 140 character tweets that people are sending out from their network. It looks like Google and Microsoft are both interested in absorbing what’s happening in the twitterverse into their search results.

Awhile back we covered the Search3 website and how they’re integrating search together into a single portal, with one of the providers they use being twitter updates.

There’s not a lot of details on how Microsoft and Google would work out integrating twitter updates into their search algorithms. I’m actually a bit confused on how they would use those results differently. Everything you tweet is public, unless you have your tweets protected, and each tweet shows up on its own page. I would think that both Google and Microsoft could spider these pages like everything else and organize them differently onto their pages.

The difference may be that Microsoft and Google are wanting to provide the twitter results related to your search terms into an additional sidebar next to the results. If they segregate the results in that manner perhaps there are usage rights that must be paid for to deliver that to end-users.

This one could be, and we’re stressing could be here, a very big “uh oh” for the rest of the real estate world. As you already know, Google is without a shadow of a doubt, the most dominant and powerful internet company. While it’s clear they have some competition rising up the ranks (see also Facebook), so far, Google is the powerhouse and the bigboy on the block.

So when that powerhouse decides to stick its finger into an industry like real estate, I’m fairly sure that even if it’s not completely set up and polished yet, we could probably hear the collective *gasp* of other real estate companies and sites around the world. Yes, Google is expanding its real estate listings on their Google Maps, and yes, this could be a pretty big blow to the traffic that current industry leaders like Realtor.com, Zillow and Yahoo Real Estate are receiving.

If time is any indicator, however, they don’t have to be too scared. Google Map/Real Estate has been around for awhile, and so far they haven’t even made a dent in the traffic any of them are receivin. Will this new update cause it? Possibly, but the simple fact of the matter is, it doesn’t work as good as any of the competition, and until it does, I don’t see the traffic flow being redirected.

The bottom line is, when Google decides to do something, it’s worth paying attention to. They might not always succeed at first, but when you have the power and resources that they do, anything is possible. So, for all you other real estate sites: Don’t gasp yet, but you might want to start holding your breath a little.

Looks like Twitter isn’t the only one getting some search engine revamping. As you know, Facebook has been making a huge push over the last few months to be the hands-down winner when it comes to social networking, social media and changing the way we all interact with each other. Yesterday we mentioned how a Microsoft vet was trying to revamp the way we search Twitter, today we find out that Facebook is trying to revamp how you search IN Facebook. To be honest, we think the latter is a lot more necessary at this juncture.

As of right now, searching on Facebook is extremely limited and usually only displays people or pages. What is needed is to be able to search Content of those people you’re connected to. In a blog post on Facebooks page, they gave this example of how it might be changing:

“By entering the term “Iran” in the “Search” field in the upper-right corner of any page on Facebook, I will see up-to-the-minute results from my friends and the Facebook Pages of which I’m a fan, not to mention people who have chosen to make their profile and content available to everyone. I’m able to discover what blogs and news sources my friends are following, what my friends are saying about President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, and how people in general are reacting to the election results.”

Considering the fact that Facebook’s current search is basically terrible, and considering the fact that more and more people are sharing more and more information on Facebook, this is a very necessary, and very needed change. How deep that search will go still remains to be seen, as privacy is certainly a concern, but after they are done with the early testing, they might roll it out. Stay tuned.

by Senior Staff Writer – Tyler Knott Gregson

If you’ve ever used Twitter you’ve most likely found one little flaw: There is SO much information, that getting through it at all is nearly impossible. To find out anything of substance, at this point, has been difficult as sifting through the mountains of tweets can be mind-bogglingly frustrating. Looks like there have been a few attempts to create good search engines, and even Twitter has one, but apparently a former Microsoft head honcho thinks they can do better. Enter CrowdEye.

That’s right, Ken Moss, who was a 20-year Microsoft employee and most recently even worked with their new Live Search, thought that there had to be a better way to sift through all of the information on Twitter. CrowdEye is a new real-time search engine that he hopes will make things much easier. According to reports, he thinks there is plenty of room to improve:

“We are certainly big fans of Twitter here and the platform that they are providing for the world, but I think they would be the first to admit that they are not taking full advantage of how to provide interesting search results…Things like looking through the links that people are Tweeting about and providing what the popular links are or what the popular hashtags are or any type of time view.”

Considering the fact that there already ARE Twitter Search engines, including one that is actually run By Twitter, it will be interesting to see how CrowdEye actually stacks up and how much traffic and use they’ll actually see. Nevetheless, we always love to see startups trying to improve on areas they feel aren’t up to par.

Will this work? Time will tell, but having a Microsoft vet on board sure can’t hurt.

by Senior Staff Writer – Tyler Knott Gregson

Tis the season for Search Engine news it looks like! First we have the news that Microsoft’s Bing has finally launched, trying it’s best to give Google a little heat, and now we get the reports that a search engine powered entirely by Twitter member’s and their Tweets has launched. That’s right, startup Topsy.com has finally gone live.

Similarly to Google’s search, actually, Topsy.com will display all of your search results based on a “popularity metric” that instantly takes into consideration not only the popularity of the Twitter user in question, but also the number of retweets they have and how many followers the user might have.

The good news about Topsy is that they have full plans to go a lot bigger than just Twitter and related searching if they can actually see some success. Currently, they are doing just that, reports are saying that they’ve already brought in over $15 million in equity and debt to date, and that includes a fairly sizable chunk of $900,000 in seed funding from angel investor and Listbot founder Scott Banister. The thing about Topsy that might just set them apart and keep them extremely relevant is the fact that their search results are actually extremely timely in the opposite direction of Google. Try this on for size:

“Essentially, searching Twitter is more likely to produce results that are hot at the time because exchanges are taking place in real time. Google and its ilk lag behind this group. For example, if you were searching for the best computer to buy, Google would serve up links to sites that have built the best reputation over time by getting a lot of hits and linking to other high-traffic sites. Topsy would deliver links to the computers that the most people are tweeting about right now.”

by Senior Staff Writer – Tyler Knott Gregson

In a world where EVERYTHING is changing at every moment, that might just come in extremely handy. After all, everyone else is going more “real-time,” why shouldn’t search? Stay tuned to see what happens to this one!

Sneaky sneaky sneaky! Without much fanfare or applause, Microsoft finally launched Bing.com and let it go live to the public. At first, going to Bing.com was merely rumored about and speculated as to when we’d finally get our hands on the actual product, but now, going to either Bing OR Live.com automatically sends you to the much hyped, somewhat anticipated Bing search engine that Microsoft seemed so excited about.

In the simplest terms, Bing is Microsoft’s newest and most updated attempt to steal a bit of Google’s thunder, and they are hoping to do that by, according to reports, sticking to four main verticals of search. The article we just read mentioned:

“according to Microsoft, Bing will focus on four verticals: making a purchase decision, planning a trip, researching a health condition, and finding a local business.”

How well they do that still remains to be entirely seen but nevertheless, it is fun to take a new search engine for a test drive, and that’s exactly what many are doing around the globe today. My first impressions are that it is a fairly robust little search engine and for those four verticals, it might actually hold some weight. The only problem is, and this has been mentioned by others that tested it as well, Google’s Universal Search allows for results of every different nature to show up in the results, from videos to news reports to even images, making your search a lot easier and more “all-in-one place.” With Bing.com you have to click the other options, from News to Videos to bring those up. Not a huge deal, but still, noticeable.

The bottom line is, there is some competition for Google, while it still hasn’t been seen just how much that is. For those 4 verticals, we’ll have to wait and see just how it affects the traffic and click-through for Google, and for Microsoft. Welcome to the fray Bing.com.
