By Staff Writer – John Federico (@gadgetboy)

It seems that our own Kris Smith isn’t the only thinking about monetizing his content.

Avner Ronen, CEO of my favorite IPTV company, Boxee, wrote on their blog today about the forthcoming Boxee Payments program.

Beginning “this summer,” Boxee users will be able to purchase content with one click of the remote. The implications for this are huge.

Ronen says it best as he references the government mandated changes in how video and IP services are provided vs. the consumer demand that has moved Boxee in this direction:

It’s our belief that the Internet is ready to become the 4th method of distribution for broadcast & premium content after Cable, Satellite, and IPTV (FiOS, u-Verse, etc.). In the case of Satellite and IPTV, it took an act of congress to open up these delivery methods. This time it’s people who are demanding this change.

Consumers are demanding their content when, where and how they want it and are willing to open their wallets if the content is easily accessible and reasonably priced.

It also means that Boxee just introduced a major component of its business model. For its part in bringing together content providers – large and small – with the consumers who demand it, Boxee will receive 30 percent of the fees, whether subscription or a la carte.

This doesn’t mean that advertising is off the table. In fact, it still might be critical in making this business model work for all stakeholders. However, a Boxee distribution platform can enable significant opportunities for realistic audience measurement, pushing online video advertising even further into advertiser budgets and consumer living rooms. Perhaps Boxee will play a part in this revenue opportunity, too. We’ll wait and see.

For starters, I would like to see Boxee capture affiliate revenue by supporting the Amazon Video on Demand and Amazon MP3 stores. I don’t envision difficulty in getting the deal done so perhaps it’s a technological concern.

As always, we’ll keep an eye on Boxee and hope for their success – whatever that may ultimately look like.

By Staff Writer – John Federico (@gadgetboy)

When Roku launched their original Roku Player with Netflix, I knew it was going to be a hit. I ordered it the moment it was available and was glad I did – it sold out in a matter of hours.

When it arrived, I was quite pleased with how easy it was to connect to my home network over wifi (802.11g) and to my HDTV. Of course, it didn’t offer HD content at the time, but it had an HDMI connector and both companies (Roku and Netflix) promised HD capabilities over time.

Sure enough, as the Netflix streaming catalog expanded, HD playback capability arrived on the Roku box a number of months later. Since then, Roku has added access to Amazon’s Video on Demand and MLB.TV – both are premium content that require suitable account setup on both services.

Today, Roku has announced even more improvements and updates with the launch of The Roku Channel Store, a selection of internet video and audio content channels that can be played on your Roku, Roku SD and Roku HD-XR set top box.

The “store” moniker is a bit of a misnomer because as of right now, all of the new channels are free. They include: Pandora, Facebook Photos, Revision3, Mediafly, TWiT, blip.tv, flickr, FrameChannel, Motionbox and MobileTribe. A complete list of channels can be found here.

To me, the best tidbit of information in today’s announcement is the open accessibility for channel creators:

“To create a channel for the Roku Channel Store, a developer creates an application using Roku’s free software developer kit. This SDK is available free upon request by emailing partners@roku.com.“

Wait – did Boxee just get a competitor? Sort of.

Roku owners can’t add their own channels via RSS feeds, nor use bittorrent to download media files, nor does one have to pay for Boxee. However, considering that you still need suitable computer hardware to run Boxee, I’d call it about even. Actually, no – it’s not even since a Roku player with HD capability only costs $99 – far less than a suitable machine required for Boxee.

IPTV is finally starting to heat up. It’s about time. This is going to be fun.
